Valley of Ashes – It represents the real world. it filled with under payed, hard working people who want nothing more than a happier life. It is a poor, ugly and depressing place located in between east egg and west egg. Not a place of hope but a place of death and sadness. The people that live in the Valley of Ashes are people who are at the beginning of the American Dream, they work long hard hours but aren’t getting any where.

  • Select two of the settings from above and discuss how these settings helped you to understand the idea of illusion in the novel. Use quotes to support your ideas.

East Egg helps understand the idea of illusion because it is shown as a place which is so beautiful perfect and happy but underneath that mask it is a place full of people who don’t care about anything but there money and the status that they are being given. East egg is a representation of the Buchanan’s and the Buchanan’s are a representation of East Egg. ’Across the the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable East Egg glittered along the water.’ Nick associates daisy with the colour white how she is plain and empty he also does the same here with white places.

Valley of Ashes

‘…finally with a transcendent effort, of ash grey men, who move dimly and already crumbling through the powder air.’
