Gatsby – Theme

1. Explain what you think Fitzgerald is trying to say about society by presenting the idea of illusion so thoroughly throughout the text.

2. Discuss how “illusion” is a real idea for teenagers. What problems/challenges/issues do teenagers face each day and how can we relate them to illusion.

What Fitzgerald is trying to say about society by using the theme of illusion throughout the text to try and tell us that no matter what type of status you have nothing and no one is what the seem. For example on East Egg where Tom and Daisy live is the rich old money family’s and it is a very faceless and materialistic place. Illusion id real to teenagers because it is so related. We all try and prove that we are “cool” by wearing the branded clothes and and new styles. I find that quiet challenging because i don’t understand why we get judge on what we wear is it because is shows off our wealth or is because people just like or don’t like what we are wearing. Its an issue because if people just base there judgements on by the status that have been given then you might end up being friends with people that you don’t even like yourself but your friends with them because they have the similar status to you. I find this hard because because of what society has done if you were to try and break that then u would be the one that gets the weird looks and the whispers behind your back but if people where to just ignore it all then this class system of society would just disappear and who knows people might actually become friends with someone your might never have thought you would be friends with. Socail society has changed so that people judge people on their outward appearance before they meet them and find out what they are like on the inside.
